what a wonderful day to remember and acknowledge that femicide is not a third world/latin american problem, we just happen to have active and effective enough feminist movements that we managed to both put a name to it and make it a prosecutable crime.

just because you don’t put a name to it or collect specific statistics doesn’t mean the problem isn’t there, in fact it only serves to obscure very serious issues no one wants to talk about except from the safe distance of “this only happens in third world countries”.

get engaged about femicide in your communities now.

I’ve tried to say this before, but I’ve seen plenty of reports of what to a Latine would be an obvious femicide, treating the subject as a politically neutral murder that just “happens” to be committed by a man against a woman for “accidentally” misogynistic reasons, often accompanied by other forms of gendered violence.

But, since it happened in a 1st world country and it’s (usually) perpetrated by white men in this type of reporting, that’s all there is to it, even in the eyes of the local feminists. Because femicides are totally just a thing that happens in those poor pathetic backwards underdeveloped countries. It couldn’t possibly happen in the US, Canada, Europe…

Never seen American serial killers who only or mostly kill women be referred to as serial femicidal murderers, even as they often inflict horrendous misogynistic violence against their victims, then maiming or discarding their bodies after the fact as if they were garbage in a way that shows clear hatred that goes beyond just being a generic killer.

I know my country and how our various feminists movements, individual activists and organizations work. We would call that out immediately as serial femicides. We created the terms lesbicide, transfemicide, travesticide, etc.

Shit’s looking terrible for women all around the world, but while 3rd world feminists risk their necks to call it out and fight it, feminist movements in 1st world countries are so disjointed and dominated by white and wealthier cis women, that the only thing they end up doing successfully is selling cute merch made by female sweatshop workers in our countries.
